AMG started as a small company tuning Mercedes-Benz cars and has since grown to become the performance division of Mercedes-Benz, defining the pinnacle of the luxury performance market.
In 1967, Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, former Mercedes-Benz engineers, established AMG with the simple goal of developing high-performance racing engines for Mercedes-Benz vehicles.
Aufrecht and Melcher’s initials provided the A and M in AMG. The letter G refers to Grossaspach, the birthplace of Aufrecht.
The two men operated their company in the Old Mill in Burgstall. The first major accomplishment for AMG came in 1971, when the company developed the 300 SEL 6.8 AMG for the 24-hour race at Spa-Francorchamps. The car finished a sensational second in the overall standings.
Over a number of years AMG continued to grow in notoriety until the company grew too large for their premises, therefore AMG and its 40 employees moved to Affalterbach where they still remain today. In 1991, Daimler acquired a 51% share in AMG and in 2005 Daimler acquired the remaining shares.
Throughout the world, the letters AMG continue to stand for a unique driving experience, with cutting edge technology, power and exclusivity.
